  • Circling the Globe in a Solar-Powered Plane | That’s Amazing

Some dreams are so fantastic, it takes an unprecedented bid for adventure and glory to see them blossom to fruition. Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, captivated by the spirit of great expeditions of the past, partnered to make the first flight across the world in a solar-powered plane that produces no pollution. Storing solar energy in batteries, the Solar Impulse is capable of staying aloft indefinitely. However, as Piccard and Borschberg learned, this didn't make the adventure easy — or require any less intrepid heroism from the co-pilots. • Largest Sun Eruptions 2012 - Beautiful and Amazing Solar Eruptions!

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the most powerful solar flare eruption in 2012. The Sun has been very active in the last week. NASA scientists say our star flared up producing five major eruptions in two days that generated spectacular northern lights displays over the weekend. The CME we reported on earlier today was obviously just a warm up to the latest blast: A beautiful prominence eruption producing a larger CME off the east limb (left side) of the sun on April 16, 2012 at about 17:45 UTC (1:45 pm EDT). The event, which also produced an M1.7-class solar flare, was not Earth-directed, say scientists from the Solar Dynamics Observatory. But SpaceWeather.com says the blast confirms suspicions that a significant active region is rotating onto the Earth-side of the sun. "Sun E...

Hot plasma in the corona cooled and condensed along strong magnetic fields in the region. Magnetic fields, are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, and outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface. If you took 10 sextillion grains of sand, put them into a ball, it would have a radius of 10.6 kilometers. And for the high end of our estimate, 200 sextillion, it would be 72 kilometers across. If we had a sphere bigger than the Earth, it would be an easy answer, but no such luck. This might be close. So, is there that much sand on all the beaches, everywhere, on this planet? You’d need to estimate the average volume of a sandy beach and the average amount of the world’s coastlines which are beaches. The estimates and calculations made by Dr. Jason Marshall, aka, the Math Dude are that, there about 700 trillion cubic meters of beach of Earth, and that works out to around 5 sextillion grains of sand. Not only that, satellites have detected thermal energy here and have seen water vapor coming out from the surface. Scientists ponder the possibility of life on this planet since there’s liquid water underneath the frozen ice sheets. 9. Saturn The sixth planet from the sun is Saturn and this is another gas giant but much smaller than jupiter. Saturn is mostly known for its rings that surround it. If you’re an amateur astronomer this is one of the coolest planets to look at because you can often see the rings1! It takes 29 earth years for it to make one lap around the sun and it’s mostly made up of hydrogen with a metalic core. . 8. Titan Saturn has 62 confirmed moons just behind saturn for the most in the solar system and the one we barely see in this image is of the moon Titan which mysteriously has oceans of liquid methane. Scientists have been debating whether or not life can form in these oceans extremely far from the sun in this chemical. 7. Titan Crescent Imagine looking up in the sky and the moon was green instead white like we’re used to or just seeing more than 60 of them! Here in this photo we see what Titan might look like from saturn's point of view during a crescent stage. Titan, which is larger than the planet of Mercury, almost has a planet like atmosphere and it takes 15,945 earth days to rotate saturn. The atmosphere has an orange haze to it which is mainly composed of 95 percent nitrogen and 5 percent methane, kind of like earth. The orange haze is still somewhat of a mystery. 6. The Surface It’s very hard to tell what Titan’s surface actually looks like, but we know there’s an atmosphere and we know there’s liquid methane. It’s best to show you an artists representation that we think could be accurate. This illustratio n by Ron Miller shows the liquid pools of methane and the strange atmosphere on this moon. 5. Uranus Little did you know that photos of your Uranus were on the internet! Once we venture off this deep into space, it’s a little more complicated getting images of it. Only one spacecraft called the voyager 2 has passed by it. The deep blue color would make you believe this is filled with a blue ocean but it’s not! It’s actually blue because it absorbs red light from the sun and reflects blue light. 4. Neptune Neptune is the Roman god of the sea and you can can tell it looks somewhat similar to Uranus only bluer. This thing takes 164.8 earth years to fully orbit the sun and it’s only about 2.7 Billion miles away. This was taken by the Voyager 2 satellite and you can tell it has a giant blue spot in a few places. 3. Triton This image is computer generated to fit both neptune and triton in the same photo but we imagine an image like this in solar system is possible, Neptune has a ring system but also 14 different moons. The most notable one is Triton which has a crazy geological system. On this moon, there’s volcanos but do you really think these volcanoes are going to spew out hot lava from billions of miles from the sun, no! Triton actually has volcanoes that shoot out liquid nitrogen, which we use on earth to freeze things instantly like warts. 2. Pluto And finally, the last planet we have photos of, is pluto, thanks to the New Horizons Long Range REconnaissance orbiter. Nasa believes that there is a 10th planet out there but haven’t gotten any photos for us yet. Many have debated whether this is a planet or a dwarf planet or whatever it is, but at the end of the day, it still orbits the sun. Named after the greek god of the underworld, Pluto is certainly a dark place to be. It’s situated about 3.6 billion miles away and has a rocky rough surface. 1.Comet Halley Halley’s comet orbits our most well known comment and it travels around our solar system ever 75-76 years. It’s very rare to witness this kind of thing, let alone trying to catch a photo of it with a satellite! In 1986, this ball of dust and ice was caught on camera by Giotto, a European spacecraft. It’s very rare to see the nucleus of this comet in such detail!

The words failure of epic proportion are thrown around a lot these days..... however Solar Roadways grand unveiling may have just raised the bar on what that actually means. We were promised roads that would generate power, be computer controlled, modular, replaceable, with programmable lights that would function as road markings that would be visible during the day. What was delivered was a 'road' that couldnt be driven DIDNT GENERATE ANY POWER had LED lights on that just cycled LED that were not visible even when the STREET LIGHTS WERE STILL ON, let alone in full daylight! and of course 75% of them died within a week of instillation. You too can now watch the brilliance of the REALITY of solar freakin roadways live! http://www.cityofsandpoint.com/visiting-sandpoint/solar-roadways#ad-image-2 You would have thought such a failure to achieve anything would have dampened their bold claims.... but not at all, they are now claiming the road will recharge your electric car while you are actually driving......sigh.... and they STILL get wall to wall favorable media coverage! If you decide to build a solar-powered house, you can essentially live ‘off the grid, providing yourself with your own food, power, water, sewage treatment, and so on. Just because you want to live in completely self-sustaining home, doesn’t mean it has to be primitive, as if it were separated from the 21st century! Believe it or not, these homes actually have quite a lot of modern amenities you would find in a typical home!

Our Solar System is big; I’m talking a few billion miles big! It’s the sun and all the objects around it. It’s been around for roughly 4.6 billion years already, and the planet we live on is the 5th largest planet in the Solar System. Today we look at some incredible facts about our Solar System! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 13 - Extreme weather ahead…. As if the horrible weather on Uranus wasn’t enough, let’s have a look at some of the other planets. Jupiter has insane winds, and on Jupiter, you'll find the Great Red Spot, which we'll touch on later, it's a massive storm that's been raging for 300-years! Mercury and Mars can go from one extreme to the next in just one day and Venus gets scorching temperatures that are 5 times hotter than boiling water. Finally, wind in Neptune can reach speeds of 1600 mph! 12 - A weighty issue… If you're in the middle of a game of 30-Seconds, your friends will think you're incredible to know this piece of information. The sun is so heavy that it accounts for 99.8 perfect of the solar system's mass! A teaspoon of the sun is said to weigh 10 million tons! 11 - Here, there and everywhere… It’s been more than 60 years that we have been exploring space, and within those few years, we’ve been fortunate enough to send spacecraft to every single planet including 2 dwarf planets, Pluto and Ceres. Think of all the information we’ve gathered in just over 60-years, and then think of what’s still to come. Quite incredible, isn’t it? 10 - Put a ring on it… It seems like Saturn isn’t the only one sporting some jewelry, there are other planets with rings as well. Planets like Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus all have rings around them, they're just harder to see because they're so far away. 9 - Sailor of the skies…. Ever wondered where the word astronaut comes from? Astron is the Greek word for Star and nautes means sailor. So direct translation would be star sailors, which I actually think sounds far better than astronauts! 8 - It’s written in the stars…. It’s believed that the Milky Way could contain as many as 4000 billion stars and probably an equal number of planets! The IC 1101, which is the largest galaxy known to man, features more than 100 trillion stars, which smaller galaxies have around 10 billion. Despite all these billions of stars out there, we can only see around 2,500 of them from earth. 7 - Waste Not, Want Not… Thanks to Jupiter, the solar system has its very own garbage disposal. Jupiter has a powerful magnetic field that attracts any space debris into its orbit, thereby protecting the other planets from any damage. 6 - A sizable issue… Scientists have now confirmed that Mercury is still shrinking. For a long time, it was thought that earth was the only tectonically active planet in the solar system, meaning that there is change and movement on the planet. This train of thought changed when the first orbital mission of Mercury was compared to a later orbital mission, and major differences were noted. Data was captured in 2016 where new cliff like landforms was discovered, proving to scientists that after 4.5 billion years, the planet is still contracting. 5 - Changes are coming… Probably one of the most well-known stars is the North Star, the one that is used for navigation purposes. But that may eventually change, but not in our lifetime. I’m no scientist, but it has to do with the earth’s rotation, to give the most basic explanation. In 3000 BC, the North Star was a star called Thuban, and in roughly 13,000 years, it’s believed the North star will be one called Vega. 4 - Out Damned Spot… I mentioned earlier that we would have a look further at Jupiter's Great Red Spot. It's got nothing to do with Shakespeare, and absolutely nothing to do with bad skin, but rather this spot is where the solar system's largest storm is raging and has been for the last 300-years! However, it's been noted that the spot is shrinking! The size in 2014 was 10,250 miles across, which is half the size that has been recorded in history. The shrinkage is being monitored, and could just be a matter of time before the storm disappears completely. 3 - Stand out in a crowd… Venus likes to do things differently, and instead of spinning clockwise like every other planet, she likes to spin counter-clockwise. Another strange thing that is happening, is that the spinning is slowing down. At this stage, it’s not clear why this is happening. 2 - Slow and steady… Speaking of slowing down, earth’s rotation is also happening a little more slowly than usual. What this means is there could be longer days in the future. It most certainly won’t be in our lifetime, as it’s only slowing down around 17 milliseconds every hundred years, so in about 140 million years’ time, the days could be 25-hours long! 1...

10 AMAZING SOLAR POWERED GADGETS 1. Window Socket - Most solar powered gadgets work by harnessing energy from the sun, then storing it, and then using it. The Window Socket works directly. You just stick in on the window and it works as a power outlet. This gadget works by converting the solar energy into electricity through a built in converter. You can charge your phone, ipod, or any other appliance with its help. The best thing is that it’s small and you can take in anywhere with you. It’s perfect for travelling, as it enables you to use electricity in places you previously couldn’t, like outside, in your car or on a plane. 2. Solarmio Kindle cover - This solar powered cover for kindle holds a few small solar panels at the front, which means you can charge it just by putting it on a windowsill or on a table on a sunny day. It could also be charging while you’re reading your kindle outside. Basically it charges whenever sunlight is available. The awesome thing about it is that the solar panels hold enough energy that later at night you can use it to power the little built in flashlight that will light up your kindle. Unlike other kindle covers, this one doesn’t draw power from your device to light up the kindle, it uses the energy saved up by the solar panels. 3. Eton Rukus Portable Bluetooth Solar Powered Wireless Speaker System - A portable solar powered speaker system is a perfect gadget for summer picnics. Before this you’d have to listen to music through your phone’s speakers, which aren’t that good. Or you’d use one of those dock station speakers that will kill your phone’s battery in a matter of minutes. 4. KudoSol Case - How often do you find yourself being worried that your iPad or iPhone will die on you? It’s very likely to happen if you play a lot of games or use a lot of apps. And lets be honest, we’re constantly on our phones, checking twitter, instagram and other social media. This awesome solar powered gadget is a perfect solution. It’s a case that both protects your iPhone/iPad and charges it at the same time. KudoSol has solar panels built into your iPad case that store the energy and charge your device. It’s a lifesaver for those times you’ve forgotten to bring a charger with you or if you’re somewhere outside and there’s nowhere to charge your device. 5. Six in 1 Solar Robot Kit - If you’re sick of changing the batteries in your child’s toys – get this solar powered toy. This gadget can work from either the little built in solar panel or from a 50W halogen bulb. It’s a transformer toy that can be made into a boat, a plane, a puppy and other shapes. 6. Husqvarna Hybrid Lawnmower - If you hate mowing the lawn and have been hoping for an appliance that can do it for you – this is it. Your dreams came true. Husqvarna Hybrid Lawnmower is a completely automatic lawnmower. It’s like a Roomba for your lawn. You just program it, push a button and this solar powered gadget does all the work for you. 7. Solar-Powered Backpacks - A backpack that can charge your devices on the go – this brilliant invention if perfect for campers. You can just stick all your phones, tablets and laptops in it and keep them charged even when you’re camping in the middle of nowhere. 8. Solar-Powered Bike Locks - This incredible solar powered gadget is called a SkyLock. It has a solar powered battery that can work for a week after just an hour of charging. It’s also equipped with bluetooth technology, so you can unlock your bike with your phone. And as a bonus, this gadget also features a security setting that will let you know if your bike is being stolen. It can also be programmed to alert the authorities if you get into an accident. 9. Solar-Powered Vehicles - Solar cars might not technically be gadgets, but they’re a thing that already exists. Yes, the future is here. We’ve got cards that are covered in solar panels and can actually drive! Sure, they’re not common and they don’t go very fast, and are mostly used for solar powered car races, but they exist. 10. World’s Largest Solar- The Tûranor PlanetSolar is the worlds biggest solar powered boat and it’s actually the only ship in the world that travelled all the way across the globe using nothing but solar power. The top half of the ship is completely covered by solar panels, which makes it look all sleek and futuristic. Tom Pickett 'From The Heart' Hi everyone. I'd like to share something very personal and very special with you all, some of my innermost thoughts and feelings. I hope it gives you an insight into my life and my world as we all travel down this exciting pathway called 'life.' I have worked as a land surveyor for the last 32 years enjoying every minute of it, but my passion and my love has always been Astronomy. Like you I guess, I just get lost in the stars! Back in June 2008 (when the economy crashed here in America) I lost my job. Since then I've been working odd jobs, just barely getting by and trying to keep my head above water. One night in September 2011 I was out on the front porch with my 5 inch refractor, just sweeping the sky, looking at whatever I could find through my 20mm window on the Universe. I glanced sideways and noticed this huge full moon rising above the horizon. Fantastic! I rushed to get my digital camera and decided to try a few shots. I got carried away, I was mesmerised. Throughout the night I must have taken over 50 images through my telescope before heading downstairs to download them on my computer. Quickly scanning through my collection I found one that was just spectacular. I just looked and looked and stared at that image for hours! The next morning I got up, downed a hurried breakfast and turned on my computer to look at my image of the moon again. What!! I took this? I was chuffed, it was beautiful. The image took me back to when I was 7 years old, looking through my first telescope. It opened up a whole new world for me and set me on a path that's taken me to where I am today, an adult, but still with that irrepressible 'little kid' sense of curiosity and wonderment. I was stoked at what I could see with such a small scope. I glimpsed the Universe, and I wanted more! A few days later I looked at the image of the moon again and a crazy thought crossed my mind...could I make a video of the solar system? Without hesitation I checked NASA's website and started looking at all the images of planets, moons and asteroids. Then it hit me, I could actually do this if I again found the right attitude from the same little boy that once challenged the Universe to give up its secrets with his 4.5 inch reflector. Putting the video together was a challenge to say the least. I was considering everything, thinking of this and thinking of that. I wanted it to be perfect. Overnight, my mind raced like it always does when you've got big plans. The next day I turned my computer on to view the video again, and hated it! I was devastated! All those hours of work, all that effort... and for what? Then I saw the problem, it was too cluttered. Excessive captioning, naming the planets, their sizes and the distance from the Sun was just too much. All my focus was on the text and not the beauty of the planets. So I went back and literally spent hours removing all the text and captioning. On review it suddenly came alive! This was what I was striving for - but it needed a music bed. More hours pouring over countless music tracks I've heard over the years produced the haunting "New Sight" from Star Trek Insurrection by Jerry Goldsmith. It was perfect, I loved it! After tweaking the video to fit the mood of the music, I began reviewing it. I played it over and over, for hours, before telling myself the young 7 year old boy in me could at last get some sleep. Before retiring I posted it on YouTube in the hope someone else might enjoy it. The next morning I got up to get some coffee and turned on YouTube to take a look. Wow! Am I seeing right? My video had over 2,000 views on it ...and over a hundred comments! Did I do this? I was in shock and overwhelmed, I just couldn't believe it. A few days later a teacher from South Korea sent me a text asking if she could share it with her students. I thought of the number of children in that class who were going to see it. My video! Folks, I broke down and cried that day. My dream and my passion for astronomy as a 7 year old boy was now coming alive in others. Since that moment I've received thousands upon thousands of emails from teachers, planetariums and others around the world thanking me for making the video and sharing it with them. Most of you may not know this but I have not made a single penny from this video, not one cent! I didn't want to, I just wanted to share it. Friends, I've gained so much joy and happiness knowing I have touched so many souls with my dream about science and astronomy, just like that 7 year old boy of so many years ago. It's spurned me on to do more so I'll be back for sure. I don't think it'll be too long to wait. Carl Sagan once said, "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." I know there is and that's what keeps me going. I hope my reach continues to exceed my grasp, and I hope too I can take you all along on my journey. Have a good day and clear skies Tom Pickett

SolarCross The Sun powered electric bicycle can ride when the sun is shining and the ground is level. This electric mountain bike will continue to roll forward with no pedaling or battery power required, powered only by the sunshine. Successfully demonstrating the design. When I do pedal however... the e-bike becomes a solar power assisted e-bike. I tried to climb some small hills, works but still very slow... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lqqar1isI78 Bike weight with out solar kit: 40 lbs Bicycle solar kit: under 5 lbs Open voltage: 10 volts DC Current: 10 amps DC (under load the PV output drops) top speed: 7 km/h setting two goals : 1. break 10 km/h 2. reach +15km/h The white reflectors I've attached on the sides of the solar panels provide a noticeable difference in output from a wider degree of angle to the sun, they reflect diffuse light and are typically used for light fixtures. The material was donated by WhiteOptics.com. Some people in the past have commented that my mountain bike design is not ideal for reaching top speeds etc.. because of the added wind resistance from the panels... My reply is that speeds under 15-20 km/h wind resistance is minimal and rolling resistance is the greater factor. My solar panels are very lightweight and the prototype weighed just 100g. They survived over 600km strapped to the back of my bike as I spent 16 days trekking across British Columbia, Canada. Noticeable scratches and small abrasions are covering the Fluorinated ethylene propylene or FEP top sheets and just 3 cells have incurred damage. Though they still provide enough solar juice for this video to be made ! thanks for watching.. Raining Loops on the Sun - Amazing NASA Solar Video From NASA: On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced a moderately powerful solar flare and a dazzling magnetic display known as coronal rain. From planets that would float to the true size of the sun, these are 25 crazy facts about our solar system. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-crazy-facts-about-our-solar-system/ Here's a preview: There is an asteroid called 243 Ida that has its own moon This is the clearest picture we have of Pluto This isn't the Death Star. It's Mimas, a moon of Saturn, and it's one of the most heavily cratered objects in the Solar System. Ganymede is the largest moon in the Solar System. If it were orbiting the sun instead of Jupiter it wouldn't even be the smallest planet (Mercury is smaller). Recently scientists discovered another ring around Saturn that can only be seen with infrared. It's so big that only a picture would do it justice. Eris is the largest dwarf planet in the solar system and it orbits the sun at three times the distance of Pluto. It isn't nearly the farthest object in the solar system though. The Oort cloud wins that prize. The Oort Cloud is a belt containing trillions of icy bodies and is up to 2000 times farther from the sun than Eris. In fact, the outer edge of the Oort cloud is where objects are thought to have more gravitational influence from nearby stars than from the sun. Hyperion, one of Saturn's moons, is the largest non-spherical moon in the Solar System. If you think it looks spongy, you're right. It is half as dense as water and would actually float in a bathtub if it was big enough. On the topic of large floating objects, Saturn would float as well. Ceres is the only dwarf planet in the main part of the solar system (closer to the sun than neptune) Ceres is found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and actually consists of 1/3 of the asteroid belts matter. Ceres actually contains more fresh water beneath its surface than all the fresh water on Earth combined. In spite of all these other objects in the Solar System the sun accounts for 99.8% of its total mass
